Five-Lined Skink
Eumeces fasciatus
37.209, -93.2923
Field Notes
Description:
It has five light lines from the head to the base of the tail. Adult females have brighter stripes than adult males. During the breeding season in late spring, males have bright orange on their heads. Hatchlings and those under a year of age have brilliant cobalt-blue tails.
Average total length is 6.5 inches
Habitat:
Normally live in forests.
Notes:
These lizards are capable of regeneration. If a predator catches a skink or severs the tail, the lizard can run off and hide, leaving the confused attacker with the squirming piece of flesh. A new tail will grown in place of the old one.
