Dobsonfly (male)
Corydalis sp
-2.15, -77.69
Field Notes
Description:
These insects are in the Corydalus genus, but beyond that there doesn't seem to be much help identifying the 35 species (at least 10 of which occur in Ecuador). These dobsonflies are about 5 cm long not including the mandibles which can measure up to 3 cm in the males (pictured).
Habitat:
These are very common here in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador and can be found many nights under lights on buildings. This one was on the cement block wall of the generator shed.
Notes:
FYI-I always assumed the long, thin mandibles wouldn't have much strength so let it "bite" me just to see (pretty scientific, huh?).. While it wasn't all that bad, I was surprised to see that it drew blood. While maybe not very strong, they are obviously very sharp.
