Field Notes

Description:

A large antelope with short haired hide that has a silvery blue sheen. Wildebeest is Dutch for "Wild Beast" in Afrikaans, yet it also is called a gnu. This was taken in Ngorongoro Crater with a Canon Elan IIe.

Habitat:

They inhabit the plains and open woodlands of Southern and East Africa, migrate to find new pastures and group together with zebras, especially in open areas. In East Africa, it is the most abundant big game species.

Hi Amy, and welcome to Project Noah. Are you sure these are black wildebeest? The black wildebeest has white tail, which I can't really see in your picture. The blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) is more common the Ngorongoro area.
