Field Notes

Description:

This beetle has two color forms. In this one, the entire body is black, with orange on the legs (male). In the other, the pronotum and head are orange (female). The pronotum in both forms has lateral projections that look like spikes jutting out to the side.

Habitat:

Forested slope, near a trail. Sitting on spicebush.

Notes:

I was walking up a small hill along the trail, turned to my right, and saw this beautiful beetle sitting there. I was taken aback, as I had never seen this species before, and was able to catch it. Found at Barbara A. Beiser Field Station.
