Field Notes

Description:

This is one of our rather common and often overlooked native orchids. You can probably see why - muted colors and small flowers make it nearly invisible against the forest floor. Even being on the lookout specifically for these on this particular outing, I almost overlooked them. It was not until I was giving up and about to head home that I found my first flowering specimen.

Habitat:

Distribution
USA: AL , AR , CT , DC , DE , FL , GA , IL , IN , KY , LA , MA , MD , MI , MO , MS , NC , NJ , NY , OH , OK , PA , SC , TN , TX , VA , WV
Found in moist, humus-rich soils of deciduous forest along slopes and stream terraces, and in areas with acid soils, such as oak-pine forests.

Notes:

Spotted along the Bear Creek Trail Ellijay GA

Thanks dandoucette! :) I have a couple other of our small terrestrial native orchids I've spotted that I will add as well.
Forgot to add that this is perfect for the Wild Orchid mission http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8564480
Great spotting QW! I can see how native terrestrial orchids like this are often over looked. My friend walked right past the first one I spotted a few months ago, but I saw it, even though I wasn't thinking about spotting orchids at the time.
