Field Notes

Description:

A shelf mushroom with a red varnished appearance. These specimens are covered in a blue-green mold which provides a striking contrast to the deep red conk.

Habitat:

This species only grows on hemlock trees while G. lucidium grows on hardwoods.

Notes:

I have been following these two all year since they started "budding" in April. I didn't realize that reishi were annuals and was distraught to find them in such a state only a few months later. Their spores should recultivate this tree so I'll have to keep an eye out for next year.
