Field Notes

Description:

Small busy plant with multiple leaves and showy yellow flowers. The flowers are mid-size and are shaped a little cuplike.

Habitat:

Flower garden in Michigan with rich brown soil.

Notes:

I don't recall planting these (although I must have) and I have never seen anything come up in this garden this early in the season. I was shocked to see it in the garden especially with a bold flower already. The weather has been unseasonably warm at times in Michigan this winter and many early flowers are coming up even earlier. (I have a friend who spotted daffodil a few weeks ago).

I am unsure of what this is. Or if it is supposed to be blooming already. It is a bit damaged from being buried by leaves.
