Description:

I spotted many of these birds of prey circling over Mumbai during the 4 days I spent there in February. I took this photo from the balcony of my room. One bird was perched there and I was trying to get a good photo of that one when another came into shot and just managed to catch this, which I am really pleased with.

Thanks Atul for the ident, and Sachin for your compliment. Lucky to have the camera pointing in the right direction at the right time.
Sorry Atul..I was working to identify and hadn't refreshed...seems we are on the same track. Black kite sounds right.
i have already suggested the id Apple!
Could be a black kite too as these are common in India
To me it looks like either a booted eagle or a common buzzard.
It is from the eagle or hawk families....hard to see without a head on shot.. You could try comparing to the list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_birds_of_India#Hawks.2C_kites_and_eagles
