Field Notes

Description:

Long-legged wading bird with slender, long, curved bill. Grey plumage with speckled pattern, dirty white or light fawn breast feathers.

Habitat:

El-dorado beach on Havelock Island when the tide was out. Large boulders were exposed and this solitary bird came along... I did not actually see it feeding. It rested there for a very long time; we left before it did.

Here is a picture of a Numenius arquata showing the multiple head stripes and the much longer bill than your bird.
This is a Whimbrel. It can be seperated from all the other Curlew species by the 2 dark bands on the head, the other Curlews all have multiple dark stripes.
