Description:

Fruitbodies about 5-8cm tall and growing on a fallen branch I'm unsure what species the wood was, I suspect Sycamore since Sycamore leaves lying around I didn't check ID of closest tree. Wikipedia mentions this species 'allegedly improves the quality of the wood used in string instruments. It has not been linked to spalting of maple.' A similar species X. polymorpha (Dead MAN's Fingers) is used to spalt wood (change the colour of the wood) since it is one of the few fungi that naturally forms barriers of colour in the wood it's growing on without the presence of other species it is trying to compete with
