Field Notes

Notes:

The holes were made the year before by a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, who consistently makes evenly spaced holes to bring out the sap from a tree. Sapsuckers do vary the way they make holes depending upon the type of tree.

I will upload a pine tree with a pattern of holes, after the rains stop.
I believe they haven't arrived yet this year. These look like older holes, and I'm only supposing they are from a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker as they are dominant species that come through Illinois. The pattern would indicate a sapsucker.
great info on sap suckers. if uploaded a picture would you be able to identify the sap sucker in our area?or if it is a wood pecker or sap sucker? I have a pine tree with holes in it.
