Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized duck, the male has a dark blue gray head with a white crescent on the face. The upper body has dark brown with with brown to tan sides which have dark spots. The rump is white with a black tail. The hen is a mottled brown/light brown bird. Both birds display blue wing feathers near the base of the wing when in flight.

Habitat:

Shallow ponds, lakes and wetlands

Notes:

In our area these beautiful birds can be seen again in the fall as they pass through here on their southerly fall migration.
