Thank you Martin for the interesting information. It makes more sense, since if the weevil had eyes where the protrusions were they would be more likely to fall off. I'll update the info. :-)

you will notice that the antennae, which always have an elbow, are distinct from the eyes which hardly protrude from the head at all. The eyes are not clearly visible in your image but are at the base of the snout.
