Field Notes

Description:

Small insect, about 10 to 12 cm in length, with conspicuous colors and patterns. Belonging to the family of spittlebugs, or Cercopidae.
Easily confused with C. vulnerata (what just happened to me...); except that red stripes are smaller in C. sanguinolenta and the rear stripe is only slightly curved, while the rear stripe is clearly "W" shaped in C. vulnerata.

Habitat:

Observed on irises, in generally garrigue type of vegetation in Mediterranean environment. Seen in National Park Calanques (calanque is fjord in Mediterranean) around Marseille.
