Field Notes

Description:

You cant imagine the wind these guys cause when they flap their wings. So powerful. Many of them get injured in South Africa due to telephone lines and so forth. Also they are being poisoned by poachers. The poachers will poison a carcass of an animal they poached (these days Rhino's) so that the rangers wont find the vultures, which is the tell tale of a kill in the Kruger National Park. Very sad. All vultures and eagles are seriously loosing numbers of this fact.

Notes:

The species is listed by the IUCN as "Vulnerable", the major problems it faces being poisoning, disturbance at breeding colonies and powerline electrocution. The current population is estimated at 8,000.

There are 23 species of “vultures”: 16 Old World vultures found in Africa, Asia, and Europe, and seven New World vultures (including the two condors) found in the Americas. 1 September is International Vulture Awareness Day!
