Field Notes

Description:

Perennial herb with numerous rice-like bulbets, eaten by the Coast Salish. Steamed in pits or more recently, in metal pots.

Habitat:

grassy meadows, bluffs and open woods, from sea level to nearly subalpine.

Notes:

These are quite rare in many places and should be left undisturbed! My grandchild is carefully holding the head of the flower up on the stem so that we can see the inside of the flower in photo #2.
