Field Notes
Description:
Large (6inch wingspan) Saturniid moth. Its habit is to act like a dead leaf even to fall to the ground if disturbed, like a falling leaf. The holes in the fore wings are quite distinctive and the markings like leaf veins and a ragged edge all go to help in its disguise.
Habitat:
Mainly been documented in Central and northern South American countries. This one near Tarapoto in northern Peru on banks of Rio Huallaga.
Notes:
This moth is one of the Saturniidae family. a group of large moths which include the huge atlas moths (up to 12 inch wingspan). They often show vivid eye spots or, as in this case, windows or holes in their wings.
