Field Notes

Description:

A brown butterfly with white, yellow and blue markings on its wings and yellow tips on its antennae; fairly small in size, perhaps half the size or less of a Monarch Butterfly

Habitat:

On wildflowers located in a field of native prairie grasses, surrounded by woods and fresh water (creek and lake)

Notes:

Per Wiki: "The Edward's Hairstreak is an endangered species, and one of the places to find them is at Adam's Lake Ohio in the prairie area"

Very confusing indeed. This link http://wisconsinbutterflies.org/butterfly/species/36-banded-hairstreak describes the Banded Hairstreak as being darker than the Edwards' and many of the pictured butterflies appear to be darker than yours. Otherwise, I have no idea. Ha. That website looks like a really good guild though and I'll be using it next summer. Too bad there isn't anything like it for Iowa.

I can see the obvious stripes on the http://wisconsinbutterflies.org/butterfly/species/38-striped-hairstreak but can't really see what separates the Edwards' from the Banded and the Hickory...I know they mention tel-tale signs but I'm not familiar with the terms they use...
