Crocodylus johnsoni

Field Notes
Description:
Locally known as "Freshie", this is a small crocodilian (not exceeding 3 m) endemic to northern Australia. They can be seen in numbers in rivers and billabongs, specially towards the end of the dry season. Freshies also venture further inland through rivers where they don't have to compete with the much larger Saltwater Crocodile. Unfortunately their numbers have been declining, mainly as a result of the introduced Cane Toad whose poison is fatal to these crocs.
Habitat:
Rivers and billabongs in northern Australia, in coastal areas and further inland as well. The photo was taken in northern Queensland, on the banks of the Alexandra River in the Gulf Country.
