Field Notes

Description:

Chrysotoxum intermedium is a genus of hoverfly.
This fly presents a typical case of "Bayesian mimetism" so it simulates a wasp to avoid predators, who avoid the "aposematic" colours due to previous bad experiences with wasps and bees.
C. intermedius differs from other Chrysotoxum species because the brown mark of the wings reach their apical zone .

The larvae are thought to feed on root aphids.
It is also known as Chrysotoxum elegans.

Habitat:

Spotted in a Holm oak and pine tree forest.

Notes:

Camera Model: NIKON D300. Exposure Time: 1/800 sec.; f/14; ISO Speed Rating: 800. Exposure Bias: 0 EV. Focal Length: 300.0 mm
