It was cracked on the other side, appears a bird ate what was inside and carried it off.

What I'm saying is there are cats in my area so no killdeer would best here, some bird must have picked up the egg to eat the yolk inside. And yes I know not to keep it the smell gets very bad! Thanks for your help!

If it is a Killdeer, they generally nest in rocks on the ground. They are always building in my parents driveway. Btw, even if its dry now, don't keep it. Speaking from experience. Lol

It was by my back steps on the ground I nearly stepped on it so I picked it up and moved it. On the other side was a tiny crack and the yolk inside was dried out so nothing was alive in it. I have no idea how a killdeer egg got in my yard I rarely have any bird nest here there almost no trees.

I agree with Mandy. Where did you find it? Likely you should have taken a picture, but left the egg where it was.
