Field Notes

Description:

These kit fox tracks were found in the White Sands National Monument. Keeping under the radar, this shy and mostly nocturnal fox will often leave signs throughout the desert monument. You'll most likely only see tracks of the kit fox and sometimes dens. Kit Foxes create dens within the sand dunes near root systems of plants. They are usually tan or gray in color and have long prominent ears which help keep their body temperatures lower during the desert heat. Kit Foxes can be found in many parts of the American Southwest.

Habitat:

Within the Tularosa Basin in the northern Chihuahuan Desert.

Nice tracks! I'm hoping to go to New Mexico within this coming year. Do you know some great places to visit?
