Field Notes

Description:

Leopards show a great diversity in coat color and rosette patterns. Their rosettes are circular in East Africa but tend to be squarer in southern Africa and larger in Asian populations. Their yellow coat tends to be more pale and cream colored in desert populations, more gray in colder climates, and of a darker golden hue in rainforest habitats. Overall, the fur under the belly tends to be lighter colored and of a softer, downy type. Solid black spots in place of open rosettes are generally seen along the face, limbs and underbelly

This female was in the huge fig tree at Leopard Gorge in the North Conservancy of the Maasai Mara
That's awesome! For the first part of our trip we were in the mountains, so of course we didn't see any there. But the rest of our trip we were right around Kruger national park and spent a few days in it. We were there in the middle of summer though and it was really hot, so I'm sure during the day they were off hiding in the shade somewhere.
AshleyT , I saw lions, leopards, and cheetahs everyday. The Maasai Mara and the North Conservancy have loads of cats, and almost impossible not to see at least lions every day. Leopards you need luck and patience spending full days out in the bush. We would leave at 6:15am every morning and get back to camp by around 7:00pm every night.
That's amazing! The whole time I was there, we managed to not find any cats :( I did see some of the most amazing stuff, and it was my favorite place that I had ever been! Can't wait to go back. We barely missed a leopard killing a baboon and hyenas chasing the leopard trying to steal it. We were so upset haha
AshleyT , I was in the Maasai Mara for 8 nights , and by some miracle we ran into leopards on 5 of those days. I will be posting more pictures. It was so amazing. We saw 4 different leopards, but we saw this female in Leopard Gorge several times.
Thanks Jolly Ibanez . The amazing thing is that I was the one who spotted her in the tree , so it really was a great spotting for me !!!
I was in South Africa for 2 weeks and missed seeing these guys :( Guess that means I have to go back!! Great picture!
