Imagine as the sun passes along the sky, each leaf positions itself to face the sun. Sunflowers rotate to follow the sun. Branches may too. If the tree has not returned to original position, it is pushed further around each day and older trees may have more twisting in their trunks by this process. I get twisted with age too.
