Field Notes

Description:

The small brown grebe floated by rather quickly.

Habitat:

Seen in a marsh in Everglades National Park.

Notes:

This is one of 3 subspecies of the pied-billed grebe. It has many common names, the cutest of which, I feel, is water witch. It is threatened in NJ and MA, and endangered in CT and NH. Furthermore, in Rhode Island, it is locally extinct/extirpated.
