Field Notes
Description:
Black antennae, head, legs. Dark brown or blackish wings. Orange or reddish orange body. Male's abdomen are sometimes banded or black.
Habitat:
Found wherever poison ivy grows, these sawflies are active during spring and summer. Adults are seen on flowers or resting on vegetation. Females insert eggs around the edge of poison ivy leaves; the larvae feed on the leaves.
Notes:
Not surprising I came across this bug on the pinelands trail - I spotted some poison ivy not too long ago! A pretty cool indicator species, I think.
