Field Notes

Description:

Black and white striped, large caterpillar with red head and orange forelegs.

Habitat:

Found feeding on an unidentified plant in a yard.

Notes:

Feeds on plants of the dogbane family, Apocynacea. Which have toxic sap which makes them toxic to predators. Considered a coral snake mimic in Costa Rico.

Thanks Ornithoptera. The Frangipani tree is a a well known species of Plumeria. The plant these caterpillars were feeding on was so trampled down I didn't bother to try and figure out what it was. Plumeria is a genus in the family Apocynacea.
Awesome find! Looks like the plant is Plumeria, which is also it's main hostplant.
