Description:

Formerly known as the Everglades kite, but the name changed when the bulk of the population vacated the Everglades after an environmental disaster killed off much of their primary food source, the apple snail

A dimorphic species: the male is black with a white tail splash and the female all over mottled brown. The long hooked beak is the id key for both

Habitat:

edge of Crooked Tree lagoon

Notes:

I love the photo of the male disappearing into the morning mist. I probably could have shopped it to "normal" color, but I didn't want to. You can still see the white above the tail
