Field Notes

Habitat:

The Tree Sparrows were in front of the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower, besides the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. They flocked around a local tourist who fed them some of her lunch: rice. They seem to be not only well-fed but also comfortable with the hordes of tourists around. Other birds nearby, such as the spotted dove, seem to be equally at home in a completely urban setting. The clock tower area has a small garden with palm trees, bushes and a water feature.

Thanks for correcting it. If you could complete the habitat field as per our FAQs http://www.projectnoah.org/faq that would be great. That way we would be able to track the spread of these birds into urban areas, as appears to be the case in this spotting.
Thanks Malcolm Wilton-Jones. I made the correction.
Hi Yasmin, these are Tree Sparrows as they have a black spot on the cheeks and a brown cap. Males and females are very similar. The Male house Sparrow has no cheek spot and a wide grey crown stripe, while the female is much plainer and mainly brown as per here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_Sparrow
