Field Notes
Description:
This is a follow-up to my original spotting from 3 days ago. All four chicks have fledged, and all four have survived thus far. I was very surprised to see them return to the nest. It was vacant all day, but then I heard swallow chirps and they miraculously appeared. It's good to know they have all fared well, and I'm inquisitive now to see how long they will keep returning to this nest. They must outgrow it soon, surely? Here's the original spotting - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/401148489 Only two of the four chicks had fledged on that day.
Habitat:
Spotted high above at the entrance to a service building, at the Metroplex on Gateway estate, Murarrie, Brisbane. The Metroplex wetlands are only a stone's throw from this location, and as swallows are aerial insectivores, this area has great appeal. Fresh water, bright lights, heaps of insects, much to the swallow's delight. These young fledglings will still be fed by the parents.
