Field Notes
Description:
These were quite plentiful alongside the trail. Most were less than a foot tall. A distinctive plant with glossy, deeply veined leaves. The berries were present, though still small and green. The berries turn red and look like real coffee bean fruits when they are ripe. However, it does not contain caffeine nor is it a suitable coffee substitute.
Habitat:
Near some oak and small shrubs in moist soil at the Chassahowitzka Salt Marsh Trails in Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge
