World Oceans Day
World Oceans Day is observed annually on June 8 to celebrate the importance of the world’s oceans and promote efforts to protect marine ecosystems. The idea was first proposed by Canada at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, also known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. The day was intended to raise awareness about the vital role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth and the challenges they face from pollution, overfishing, and climate change.
Following years of growing international support, the United Nations officially recognized World Oceans Day in 2008, designating June 8 as an annual observance beginning in 2009. Since then, governments, environmental organizations, schools, businesses, and communities around the world have participated in activities and campaigns to promote ocean conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.
Today, World Oceans Day serves as a global platform for education, advocacy, and action, encouraging people to protect the oceans that provide food, regulate the climate, support biodiversity, and sustain livelihoods for millions of people worldwide.
