World Chimpanzee Day

World Chimpanzee Day is observed annually on July 14 to celebrate chimpanzees and raise awareness about the challenges they face in the wild and in captivity. The date commemorates July 14, 1960, when Jane Goodall arrived at Gombe National Park to begin her groundbreaking study of wild chimpanzees. Her pioneering research transformed scientific understanding of animal behavior and revealed that chimpanzees use tools, form complex social relationships, and share many traits with humans.

World Chimpanzee Day was officially established in 2018 by a coalition of conservation and animal welfare organizations. Founding partners included Jane Goodall Institute, North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance, Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection, and Lincoln Park Zoo, along with other nonprofit groups dedicated to chimpanzee protection. The observance was created both as a celebration of our closest living relatives and as a call to action for their conservation.

Today, World Chimpanzee Day is recognized internationally by zoos, sanctuaries, conservation organizations, researchers, and educators. The day highlights the importance of protecting endangered chimpanzee populations from threats such as habitat loss, poaching, illegal wildlife trafficking, and disease. Through educational programs and public outreach, the observance encourages greater appreciation for chimpanzees and support for efforts to ensure their long-term survival.
