National Moth Week: July 18-26

Moth Week 2026!

For this coming summer in 2026, Moth Week will be July 18-26! Participants in 90+ countries (including all 50 US States) have registered thousands of events for the annual National Moth Week.

National Moth Week Background

Mothing is a hobby for nature enthusiasts who use light or bait to attract moths to a location for observation and data collection.

National Moth Week is an annual, national event that encourages communities to host a Mothing event in their area during a specific week. Moth Week offers everyone, everywhere the opportunity to become a Citizen Scientist by submitting photos of moths to any of our participating partners for identification and data submission.

National Moth week provides a great opportunity to learn more about these fascinating creatures and also to contribute meaningful scientific data. For many moth species, distribution information is lacking or poorly documented, for others, DNA is clarifying relationships and identifying new species. National Moth Week observations and collections can fill in important data gaps and be of significant biological value. The contributions of amateur naturalists and citizen scientists form the foundation of many aspects of our understanding of moth ecology.

National Moth Week brings together everyone interested in moths to celebrate these amazing insects. Groups and individuals from all the across the World will spend some time during National Moth Week looking for moths and sharing what they’ve found. Getting involved is easy: attend an event, start an event, join friends and neighbors to check porch lights from time to time, set up a light and see what is in your own backyard. But no matter what, participate; the richness of moths is sure to fascinate!

Project Noah & National Moth Week

Project Noah has been in formal partnership with National Moth Week for over 10 years to amplify moth awareness and conservation. The National Moth Week team and Project Noah worked together to create a special way for Project Noah community members to participate in National Moth Week. Mothers around the world are encouraged to submit their moth photography during National Moth Week into Project Noah's Moths of the World Mission! Each summer, Project Noah issues a special and newly designed National Moth Week Patch for all users who submit at least one photo into Moths of the World!
