less than 1cm. long, hymenoptera. flies into small holes in wood, presumably lays an egg and then plugs hole with some form or wood pulp

Hi Brett. This is a Megachilid bee. It's impossible to be sure about the genus. Maybe Chelostoma
It is quite similar but I would say mine is not so hairy.
