Field Notes

Description:

I found a bunch of bees (I think...) on the head of a dead flower. I am posting this because I am wondering what they are doing. It appears to my untrained eye that there are two kinds of insect on the flower head: one all black, one with yellow and black. They are sitting completely still, not even any twitching. I know they are alive because I poked one with a stick and it readjusted itself on the flower head but none acknowledged my presence.

Notes:

I am confused as to why so many bees would sit so close together without moving on a dead flower stalk. Any ideas? Note: it has been in the upper 90s all week, so very hot temperature! Maybe that's part of it? We do not use pesticides in the area so I don't think that's it. Also, I have a video of them sitting completely still and feel free to request it if you think it will help.
