Field Notes

Description:

This morning I was delighted to find four groups of a mushroom I had never seen before. They are growing in the shade of a group of trees, including an Igyo, on soil that is rich in leaf litter.
Colour: Brown-yellow exterior. Cap bottom edged with bright yellow. Cut stem also bright yellow, bleeding red in some spots at the cut.
Size: Thick-capped, Large mushrooms. The largest had a cap diameter of 20 cm. The one I took home for a spore print has a cap diameter of 14 cm, stem length of 15-16 cm. The stem width nearest the cap is 2 cm. Round at the top, the stem gradually tapers to a flatter shape, widening and thickening as it goes towards the mycelium. It is 9 cm wide at the bottom, depth 3 cm.
Spores: most irregularly hexagonal; some in parallel structures.
Odor: none discernible.

Habitat:

Easement planted to native trees, with an Igyo nearby. Shady area, rich in leaf litter.
