Field Notes

Description:

This insect looks similar to a large dragonfly, but is bright red in color. When it first flew quickly by me, I thought maybe it was a baby hummingbird due to its size and the sound it made.

Habitat:

Spotted in a backyard in northeast Texas in a suburban neighborhood near Lake Grapevine.

Notes:

When it first flew by, I thought maybe it was a baby hummingbird due to its size and the sound it made. Then it landed on a plant and remained there for a solid 5-10 minutes as I got my camera and showed it to others. I've never seen anything else like it.
