The leaf looks like a classic black oak to me. Your spotting is right at the edge of their typical range, so it is plausible.
This looks like an Oak, Quercus, leaf. Black/Red Oak family had points and the White Oak family has rounded lobes. The acorns of both families differ as well. Here is a website that compares Oaks in North America. It may help you narrow your search with references for England
