Field Notes

Description:

Is this Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)? For sloe gin get 1litre bottle of gin, some white sugar and some sloes (I read the sloes should be picked after the first frost but some people bypass this by putting them in the freezer.

First, do something with 250ml of the gin... Pour it down the sink I guess if necessary. Empty the rest of the gin into another container. Put an inch or two of sugar into the empty 1 litre gin bottle. Pour 750ml of gin back into the bottle. Prick the sloes. Fill the rest of the bottle up with the pricked sloes. Put the lid back on the bottle and leave in a cool dark place for 3 months. Strain out the bits and pieces using some muslin or cloth or a sock.
