Field Notes

Description:

Iridescent green head and thorax. 5 white tufts of hair on the sides of abdomen. Brown wing covers with a triangular piece on the wings.

Habitat:

Found on the lawn near a friend's house in San Diego.

Species ID Suggestions

May Beetle (June Beetle, June Bug)

Phyllophaga sp.

Japanese Beetle

Popillia japonica

I think Keith nailed it. I was thinking that it looked a little flatter than the true June Beetles. I found some of these dead in the Fresno area.
I think these beetles are Shining Leaf Chafers in the genus Paracotalpa. http://bugguide.net/node/view/51152
Hmmm... doesn't look like the june bugs I know. But bugs are not my strong point.
Not Japanese Beetles (though they ARE scarabs). We don't have Japanese Beetles in California yet (thankfully!).
