Description:

1" long pupa found in dirt.

Habitat:

Semi rural.

Notes:

Brought indoors so I can get to see what emerges!

Jacob, I brought this indoors but there hasn't been any change though it is still moving when I touch it. You are right, it's definitely a moth of some kind but not a luna moth as it's too small & that species is a silk moth so the cocoons are suspended from trees. Hopefully at some stage I will find out!

This is definitely a moth...I do recall Luna Moths looking like this in the pupal stage, but it would be hard to distinguish until it emerges. Nice find! Not many moths get safely out of their cocoon, because of all of the predators. Same for butterflies in their chrysalises. I heard somewhere only 1 in 10 survive in the wild to become mature adults.
