Field Notes

Description:

This was about 3am. I went out back of my house to use the back door. I couldn't really make it out. Do I took a pic with my cell phone. I've noticed something has been chewing though my wood fence. I've seen rabbits in my backyard, I've seen coyotes, deer, turkeys, chipmunks, squirrels. But nothing like this. It looked like it was standing on its hind legs. My neighbor has a black and white cat. And the lady down the street has parrots. I was hoping someone would identify it so I can catch and release elsewhere. And repair my fence.

My neighbor has a black and white cat. Could it be a baby mountain lion? But standing on hind legs? And to walk on hind legs? Unless it was nursing a wound. I'm puzzled.

studying the posture, this (possibly feline/cannine) animal has turned to flee hearing your approach. the long black streak could be its tail. The rest of the animal is its back side with perhaps white insides/backs of legs. He /she has turned around to look over the right shoulder - is this a probability ?

The holes it's digging just breaches the dirt. Almost like it just pulls the grass up.

The abandoned cats here dig hollows at night to rest in but they are about football sized - 7-8 inches across.

if I had seen this in my back yard here in South Africa, I would say its a wild cat, this also looks maybe a raccoon type animal? we dont have those though. Get us another pic, this is most entertaining!

This has baffled me. I've been up since 2am every morning since and haven't seen anything. Just a few random baseball size patches of dug up grass.

No. Not a monkey. Unless its an escaped pet. Which probably isn't either. I live in Connecticut USA. Monkeys aren't even indigenous in North America. And are completely illegal to own as a pet in my state. Thanks to the lady who's monkey ripped her face off about 7 years ago.

people, people, people. i keep reading cats. does a cat stand on its hind legs, hunched over with its arms hanging down?? at least that what it looks like to me, but i think not! the man obviously knows what other types of animals look like in the dead of night. good spot man, that's a little creepy.

Only cats and owls have eyes close together like that and owls don't have long tails or chew fences!

Tom, can you please add a little more detail such as habitat, and what you were trying to photograph and under what conditions. This looks like it is taken at night with a flash but out of focus so nothing is readily identifiable except maybe a cat, in which case it should be in the Pets category.
