Field Notes

Description:

These critters have killed several trees in my backyard over the past 30 years....

Habitat:

This tree is a Cherry Tree but it also has invaded and killed my apricot, apple, and persimmon trees.

Notes:

I think it is critter that lays its egg in the bark and then the next year the new critter eats his way out but I have never seen the escaping bugger. digging into the sap bleeding hole result in nothing as the critter is allready gone. GRRRRRR

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (1)

I can't tell from the damage what the exact pest might be (I don't know if an expert might be able to) However, it is likely either a moth or beetle borer. See if this offers any help, or if you may have seen some of the adult insects in your area. http://www2.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ent43.asp
