A friend asked me what this is..I have no clue..besides maybe some sort of caterpillar or worm.

Great Picture and Very Interesting Subject!
Hi Lisa, I think this looks a lot like a Sawfly larva. Sawfly are a type of wasp and their larvae resemble caterpillars (with some differences). I am not sure of the species and it can be very difficult to identify them but at least it is somewhere to begin: http://bugguide.net/node/view/112/bgpage It's also possible that this could be some sort of beetle larva.
