Field Notes

Notes:

I'm deciding between two different species:
Red Spotted Purple, Limenitis arthemis astyanax larvae
or
Viceroy, Limenitis archippus larvae

On the other hand, this spotting here is a poplar. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/12682462 Oh dear, I'm not really helping, am I? If you still have the caterpillar, you could always try rearing it.
I see this other spotting here looks a lot like willow. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/12483709 I think that puts Viceroy in the lead.
It might help if you know what kind of trees are in the area. Viceroys feed on willow, Red-spotted Purple feeds on cherry and oak. Both feed on poplar.
