Field Notes
Description:
I have no idea what exactly have I found here - it looks like a granary, full of acorns, probably long forgotten judging by the look of them. Acorns appears to be carefully hoarded in a hole of decaying but still standing stump; and there were quite a lot of them. Some of them looked cracked, possibly eaten, others looked blackish and rotten, which is why I thought the granary was long forgotten or abandoned. I have a few candidates for this kind of hoard, but still can't find the answer - candidates are obviously squirrels, but also the Eurasian Jay, and Spotted Nutcracker...
Habitat:
Seen on lower to mid-level slopes of Jura Mountain Range, at about 700m of altitude, on the side descending towards Geneva lake valley, close to a narrow forest path. Slopes are covered by a dense mixed forest, mainly oak, beech, spruce and fir.
Notes:
Unfortunately, the hole was quite high on the stump, and I was unable to lift myself and take a good picture, and it was impossible to find a good clear angle from further away, so these pics are all I got. And I went back few days later, better equipped... but was unable to find the tree again.
