Field Notes

Description:

I have a bunch of these growing in my garden. They are about 6 - 8 inches high. Leaves are over 1-1.5" long in the bigger ones. Leaves have a jagged border. Stalks are green, thickish, & not hard like a young tree stalk. No flowers, blooms, or buds yet. It's almost as if a plant I had last year went to seed, but they don't seem to look like any of the ones I recall having planted last year. I did put in new topsoil last year, but the plants are only concentrated in one area, not all over where the topsoil went. Any ideas as to what these are?

Habitat:

Front flower bed. Zone 2-3. Part sun.
