Field Notes

Habitat:

This was found in the Mt Hood National Forest at Lost Lake just outside Hood River, Oregon.

Notes:

I have been told its common name is Stump F&%@er, or as we say around the kids a, Stump Jumper. I found information on wasps called Stump F&%@ers but they are not what this is. Please help me figure out what these are called.

Hi Zerinity. Nice spotting. I would say you are correct. I don't think it is a wasp. I actually think this is an Orthopteran (crickets & Katydids). I'm not very familiar with the Northwest species. I think its possible that it is a Mormon Cricket, which is actually a species of shield-backed Katydid, or possibly a species of Jerusalem Cricket. Do you have any other pictures of it?
