Field Notes

Description:

Small birds (maybe 3-4 inches long?) making the most of a bird feeder. I believe this may be a male/female pair, given the slightly different coloration, but same mask on the eyes?

Habitat:

Bird feeder in a clearing adjacent to heavily wooded land.

Species ID Suggestions

House Sparrow

Passer domesticus

Comments (1)

These are both males in winter plumage. In breeding plumage the mask and black on the throat are much darker. Females don't have the mask at all, just a tan eye stripe. These are an invasive species, and if it's the only species coming to your feeder, I recommend you take up your feeder. These birds are a huge threat to our native species and we shouldn't be helping them thrive :)
